Matt Cunningham with Cora Bowman on the water

Founder & coach

Matt Cunningham

Matt founded Elite Angler Academy to help competitive student anglers build skills, confidence, and sound decision-making through personal coaching on the water.

His coaching connects technique, finding fish, and tournament preparation with the conditions students face that day. It gives them opportunities to practice, receive feedback, and learn to make their own decisions.

More about Matt

A Minnesota native, Matt began competing in his early twenties and won his local bass club championship three years in a row. He stepped away to focus on family and career, then returned to tournament fishing in 2020. Since then, his primary fishing partner has been his son Matthias, who began competing alongside him at age 11.

Together, they have earned tournament wins and top finishes in youth and open events on Minnesota waters and beyond. Those results reflect habits Matt brings to EAA: preparing carefully, making disciplined decisions, and taking time after each event to understand what worked and what to improve.

Matt holds a bachelor’s degree in Physics from Gustavus Adolphus College and a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Minnesota, and is a named inventor on two U.S. patents. His analytical background shapes a coaching approach that helps students think through their choices, learn from results, and develop confidence in their own decision-making.

Matt lives near Lake Minnetonka with his family, where he and his wife have raised eight children, including five through adoption, and are now grandparents. Parenting and mentorship have shaped the patience, responsibility, and care he brings to working with student anglers. His family belongs to Mound Evangelical Free Church, and integrity, accountability, and respect guide his approach on and off the water.

Trevor Lo with student anglers on the water

Coach

Trevor Lo

Trevor brings a combination of tournament experience, professional guiding, and a passion for teaching anglers how to better understand what is happening beneath the surface.

More about Trevor

Born and raised in the Twin Cities area, Trevor grew up with a strong passion for the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting. He is married with three children and continues to enjoy sharing that passion with both his family and the next generation of anglers.

He began tournament fishing in his teenage years on local Minnesota trails before competing in the Bassmaster College Series. In 2015, Trevor won the Bassmaster College Series, earning a berth in the 2016 Bassmaster Classic. He has also competed nationally on the Bassmaster Opens trail.

Trevor has spent nearly a decade guiding anglers throughout Minnesota and now runs approximately 60–70 trips each season. His strengths center around offshore fishing, forward-facing sonar, and bottom-contact presentations. He places a strong emphasis on identifying subtle differences in structure, cover, and fish positioning to help anglers become more efficient with their time on the water.

While forward-facing sonar is an important part of Trevor’s approach, he grew up fishing before the technology became a major part of bass fishing. That background continues to shape the way he teaches. He enjoys helping anglers understand how to build patterns based on seasonal movement, structure, cover, forage, and changing conditions rather than relying on forward-facing sonar technology alone.

For Trevor, one of the most rewarding parts of guiding and coaching is watching an angler reach the point where something finally “clicks.” He enjoys sharing his passion for fishing and helping students understand not only what to do, but why they are doing it. He has shared the front deck with numerous junior and high-school anglers and regularly speaks with high-school fishing teams through seminars and other educational opportunities.

Trevor works with several companies throughout the fishing industry, including Daiwa, Joe’s Sporting Goods, Beast Coast Fishing, AFTCO, Hayabusa Fishing, Hannay’s Marine, and Bass Cat Boats. His experience extends beyond the competitive and guiding side of fishing as well. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Marketing and has worked on both the fishing and business sides of the bass fishing industry.
